Was he sent to prison for his attack on you and the baby, was it even reported?

To vague to give you a good answer, in many states in the US if he went to prison or has a history and record of being a danger to the child, you may be able to take his rights away, If not, you are going to have to get him to sign those rights over. Often being sure to enforce his paying of child support helps make them agree to sign over rights.

In order for you to have his Parental rights terminated, you will have to prove dad unfit. And if it is just your word against his, don't count on his rights being revoked.

And for having someone else take the responsibility, you need to be married, for at least a year.

Also, Judges don't like it when you "bribe" dad. As in if you sign over your rights to junior, you won't have to pay child support,

Or

If you sign over I will release you from Past CS

Or

If you don't sign over rights... I will make your life hell

If you have someone willing to adopt the kids, you stand a good chance of getting his rights terminated, especially if there is proof of the assault.

However, depending on where you live, you may need to be married to this person for a specified period before he can adopt. You will need an attorney to process the paperwork, so consult with one about what you need to do.
