I need to answer a complaint for a sum owed against a broken lease. The lease was signed by myself and another person. I never lived at the residence in question, only the other person did. The other person broke the lease and now we are both being sued. The lease was broken three years ago. I would like some advice on how to answer the complaint while at the same time stating that I feel the entire sum owed should be the responsibility of the oter defendant. PLEASE HELP!

Are you sued, or are you and "another person"? Also, has the other person been served? You need to know this.

Assuming you were only a co-signer, the creditor, or landlord, will always go after the individual they are most likely able to collect from.

It would appear they are most confident in being able to collect from you.

They are not required to sue both of you, if you were both equally responsible.

As far as the answer, you can simply deny owing the debt, and state that you will appear to defend the suit, and present your arguments at the hearing.

You do have the option, if this is decided against you, to sue the other party to try to recover your losses.
