My dog is sick. He is a 16-month-old intact male vizsla. Before last week he was a healthy, happy boy who loves to hunt birds and go for long runs down on the farm. Last Wednesday he had one small vomit (my husband and I were still at work) - mostly grass and a little yellow foam but seemed fine. So we ran him on the farm as usual - he ran like a champ. Then, when he got home he ate dinner and wanted more - he probably ate about 3 cups of his food. In the middle of the night, he threw all of the food up plus vomited 8 more times a sticky, yellow, mucous mess. He was very thirsty and wanted to eat grass every time I took him out. He has done this before once or twice and usually is fine the next day. Well this time, he did not want to eat again - not on Thursday, not on Friday, and not on Saturday morning. He also started to have soft to runny stools on Friday. He was still drinking though not enough and seemed dehydrated and very lethargic. He threw up once Thursday night. Finally on Saturday, we went to vet (we were about 6 hours from home as we were visiting my in-laws). His blood work seemed okay – just one liver value was high, about 327 when it should be around 100. She did an x-ray and was convinced he had a blockage in the base of his stomach. We got in the car and headed the 6 hours back home to see an emergency vet about the blockage. She admitted him to the animal hospital and that night he threw up the “blockage”, a pepto-bismol tablet given to him Saturday morning which had never dissolved – they show up bright white on an x-ray. So she said they would just treat him for the diarrhea and if he hasn’t thrown up for 24 hours, try to feed him. Well, it’s Tuesday now and although he’s not vomiting, he still is having runny stools every few to several hours and his attitude is awful. We visited him last night and he looked terrible because he was so bloated – I assume from all of the IV fluids. Even his anal area and testicles were huge and puffy – he almost did not look like our dog. We took him outside and he urinated clear liquid 5 times in 1.5 hrs. Outside, he was smelling the air and grass, clearly interested in his surroundings. Inside, he was depressed, shaking, and unwilling to eat or to even stay awake. The vet did say that he barked for 1 hour last night after we left and he had not done that since he came in on Saturday night. The vet is now treating him for possible intestinal parasite infection although no indication of parasites have been found in his stool but she says with all the medication they’ve given him, his stools should have dried out by now. Also, she says she heard a heart murmur last night and this morning. I’m scared and worried sick. I feel like he’s getting worse in the vet. If he’s not any worse or any better tonight, I want to bring him home for 24 hrs to see if he’ll liven up and eat for us once he’s in his regular routine and surroundings again. Could his potential heart murmur be serious enough that I shouldn’t take him home over night? Is it possible he’ll crash on me? All of his vital signs and his blood work are good, I really think it’s the fluids, the meds, and the unfamiliar surroundings making him feel worse. Does anyone have any advice? If a dog won’t eat, does it mean he’s given up on life? Help!

His tummy probably feels too ill to eat or he probably lost his appetite.
I cannot say much about his heart, but I suggest buying some pro biotic supplements for your pooch when he gets better. This will help with his intestine health.
I hope he feels better soon!
