Please could you tell me how do I deal with extractor fan wiring which has four wires but has to work on same switch as the light?

Can you explain the 4 wires(night light, lite, fan, etc)? Is it humidity sensing?

Sandy, are you in the UK?

Hi,
The extractor is in the bathroom to work off the same switch as the light. The wiring for the light is red/live, blue/neutral and green/yellow for earth. The extractor has these plus a black wire. Not sure what the black does or where it goes in relation to the other wire connections in the junction box. I am in the UK. Not sure if it is humidity sensing.

Sorry, the extent of my UK knowledge is brown=live, blue=neutral, green/yellow=earth.
I'll have to bow out of this one.

Hey, no problem.
I've been doing this long enough that when I hear words like "consumer unit, "ring mains", "extractor fan" and "cooker", I know I am in over my head. :p

Stan,
Did Sandy ever really say whether this is a fan only or a fan/light combo?

I don't see that, no.

Harold,
The extractor is separate from the light, not a combined unit.

Strat,
Could be, we don't know
Sandy you could cap off the black and install the fan to see what happens. I don't think you could hurt anything. If fan works you could then switch red and black and cap off red. The red and black could be a way of selecting speed.

Harold,
Thanks for that I will give it a try. I'll let my husband switch it on though to test it, just in case.

There are more men than women over here so we have to be careful. Anyway, he loves currants.
