Is it a phrase? I can't figure out what it means, is there any languege guru could lend me a hand?

The context is as below:

Russia wouldn't have made the Euros had England's squad not performed so poorly and failed to qualify. as a result, Russia's quarter-finals opponent, Holland, was favored to win, and win big. but that meant little to Andrei Arshavin. His late score put Russia into the semis and likely landed the Russian a spot on a Premiership team in the fall.

They received a position

It allowed them to move on to the next group of competition

In this instance "land a spot" means "get a spot." In other words, the Russian team managed to get a spot (place) on the premiership team.

Nah, not exactly I guess.

Premiership teams should be those of the England Premire League.

But thanks for your explainations for the phrase~! I have some clues now
