After you no long need it for pain, are you lying to the doctor to keep using it ? Do you buy it illegally or go to two or three doctors to get more

Fortunately there is a HUGE difference between "addiction" and drug dependency, which has two forms: physical and psycological. If you have been on this medication (it doesn't matter if it's legally prescribed to you or not-for the purposes of this question and answer session it's a moot point) for more than two weeks continuously you can perform this experiment to see if you are physically dependent. If you normally take it three times/day, hold off on the morning dose. If, after a few hours (remember-you took your last evening dose around 9pm the night before so add those hours to the hours you are holding out on the next day-try to shoot for no drugs in 12-14hrs) your nose begins to run, eyes water, and you break out in sweats-you are PHYSICALLY dependent. If you begin to think about the medicine uncontrollably, obsess over it, can"t wait to take it, but have none of the physical symptoms described above, you are PSYCOLOGICALLY dependent. You will need to see an addictions specialist either way-please don't wait until you become "strung out". Good Luck-I will remember you in prayer.

Your dr should not prescribe lortab and oxy at the same time. Essentially he should have prescribed one or the other medicine. What was he thinking?

Lortab patient advice including side effects (http://www.drugs.com/pdr/lortab.html)
Information and research on Oxycontin abuse, addiction, withdrawal, detox, rehabilitation and treatment. (http://www.addictionsearch.com/treatment_articles/article/oxycontin-addiction-abuse-and-treatment_16.html)

They are so close and are both narcotics. What was he thinking? Taking that much narcotics you will be hooked in short order.

Follow your Dr's instructions. If you have no faith in him, find another Dr. but don't try treating yourself.

I have been on oxycotin sence my back surgery 2 months and 11 days ago.I take 20 mgs 3 times a day.Do you think im addicted?
My wife started on the same dose for chronic fibromyalgia pain. I found out she was taking it 11 months after she started and she's totally addicted. She cannot live without it. From my experience< I'd seek an alternate medication.

I was hooked big time some years ago, after a seroiuis car wreck, I could not walk for over a year without a 4 legged walker, every step was serous pain. I was on several drugs for months and months, and did not ever want to stop. Was I hooked yep, was I a addict, no, large difference, since I was taking mine for a valid reason. The difference is what happens coming off and how we deal with it, the addict will not come off but find ways to keep the drugs, the person who is hooked on medical drugs legally, suffers and stops.

That is an awful huge dose you have. Why are you taking 20 mg three times a day for? For everyone here though, what kind of back surgery was it. Any kind of surgery is series but back surgery more so. 2 months is not a long time to be on oxycontin but to be at that dose, sounds excessive in my opinion. Why do you think your addicted? How much of a recovery are you looking at. It is best to get your doctor to adjust the dose, which I personally think should be lower, but depends on if your taking any other medication with it or not.

Oxycontin addictions, well if your taking more then what the doc prescribes then I would say yes. Relying on them long term depends on your condition. 2 months is not really that long.

If you are no longer in pain, and still taking them, that may be a problem to discuss with your doctor.

Okay is there something you not telling us? Why would you be asking all of these addiction questiones? I truly believe there is more to this story that's being told. For one if your doctor has prescribed you oxc and loritabs you can rest assure his license will be looked at very carefully. No doctor prescribe oxc an loritabs and I mean no doctor at the same time. The reason for me saying this is because all drugs has an idenification number when being prescribe and these numbers are being checked very carefully. Have you consulted another doctor upon the one that you're currently seeing for the oxc prescription? Every time these drugs are prescribe not only are the numbers being checked but the doctors license number also. Next time you go get and prescription filled please look at the numbers. Now I'm going to say that you need to get in some type of drug management before this condition gets any worser. Trying to decrease your intake on this medicine isn't going to work because both are narcotics. Leaving one alone without the other isn't going to work either because you have access in getting these drugs. Please contact me at the following email address so we can talk more one on one. Quitting cold is possible as I have done. But I would'nt recommend it . It can be dangerous as your body can literally go into shock. It took me a week before I even started to feel normal. Doctors are under a lot of pressure to control this drug by DEA and FDA. Iv'e had extensive experience with the doctorsand the pills trust me when I say get off opiates oxy or lorocets cause addictions and it can control your life. In tampa there's a laser surgery clinic you may want to consider that. Good luck!

I have found that when people hear the word oxycontin, they lose all perspective. Also using loritabs or even roxicontin for a breakthrough medicine is not that uncommon. This medicine is also a Godsend when a person has long term pain. It is the few who abuse it, that ruin it for everyone else.
I have to admit that this medicine has had a lot of bad press.
The advice about drug seeking activities has been good advice. However do not be scared away from your medicine if you still need it.
If you are taking it as prescribed than you are OK. It is when you begin using it in a different way (snorting, shooting, chewing) as opposed to swallowing it as prescribed. Or trying to get extra pills, then you are an addict.
Please if your pain is decreased, tell your doctor and allow him to wean you off the pills. Do not try to do it yourself. It is not only because you may be addicted or dependent that you need to be weaned but, there are a lot of medicines out that that you should not stop taking abruptly.
You have only been on this medicine for 2 months. If your injuries were huge then that is not a long time.
Any worries that you have need to be discussed with your doctor. If you do not trust the doctor that you are using then it is time to get another one, but tell him everything.
Good Luck.
