There was a discussion on fire hydrants on another thread that made me think of this, this and the fact that I posted some of my citys art on anther thread. I went in search of painted fire hydrants that our local mall has, but instead found many communitys that paint their fire hydrants. Here is a link to some that I found.Manitoba Photos - Fire Hydrants of St. James (http://www.manitobaphotos.com/fire.htm)

Goodness, the creativeness of some people just blow me out of the water. I look at a fire hydrant and I see a fire hydrant and seeing the fire hydrant, I then remember doing a cart wheel off the top of one and breaking both bones in my left arm. I just forgot to bend the elbow just a bit when I hit the ground! LOL
I love these! Thanks for posting them.

Inspirational Firmy! Thanks for sharing. I have painted themes on inside walls but never on an outside wall but would love to be a part of such a project to bring beauty to a place, otherwise a little dreary.
I couldn't quite get a handle on the sculpting from books. It was interesting for sure but even reading about it, I couldn't get it in my head how she accomplished these. Do you understand it Firmy or Bg??
It would not be my forte, a bit too delicate for my bold art style but I do admire it.

I think it is somewhat similar to making paper bags or boxes or houses, the difference is that part of the box or bag is attached to the book.
For example if I were to make a paper tree,I can make the tree trunk from strip of paper, roll it and then add the branches and leaves, but the paper art artists seem to keep part of the tree anchored to the paper itself.
This commercial shows a bit of how it is done.

Jrebel... I have no clue but it looks as though she starts them from actual cuts in the book , I would like to see more detail... I showed them to my daughter... she had already seen them in school, they have a very talented art teacher that exposes them to all types of art.
Firm... I know what you mean by thowing books away. I go to a second hand shop and they will sometimes have a crate full ready to go to the dump:( If she used old ones then it would be, even better. I highly doubt she does.. my thinking is her books probably has something to do with the theme of the sculpture.
The side walk flowers were lovely... I wish my city had a few of those.
The mural was beautiful as well, I liked the woman standing with her child on her hip. I have a print where a little boy has jumped up in his mothers arms and has his legs straddled around her waist. She has her head nuzzled tenderly up to him. It is so sweet... I did research on the piece and the woman is a famous artist and that is self portrait... the child was killed in the war when he was 19, much to her dismay, because she was against war and the mal treatment of women and spoke out against it in her drawings.Google Image Result for http://www.prints.co.nz/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/188DR_Child_in_Arms_Kollwitz_Kathe.jpg (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.prints.co.nz/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/188DR_Child_in_Arms_Kollwitz_Kathe.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.prints.co.nz/page/fine-art/PROD/Drawings_Sketches/188DR&h=350&w=226&sz=20&hl=en&start=116&tbnid=Iy8M7Bi5GwAteM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=77&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dkathe%2Bkollwitz%2B%26start%3D100%26n dsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN)

I would love to have that site in book form. I sit on my porch and look at those books overe and over... each time I see something new. I just bought a new gardening book, It's called 52 Weekened Garden projects. It gives the type of flowers to attract butterlfies. Next year I will have a butterfly garden... I have a few plants now that attract them... I hope I don't go over board and it looks like this Flickr: destin3g99's stuff tagged with krohnconservatory (http://www.flickr.com/photos/melissabrunke/tags/krohnconservatory/) They have this show each year.

1st one would be a great project for a child's rooom... my daughter is so artsy she would love it her window. SHe painted her room yellow and took chalk and drew pictures over some of the wall, and for a border at the ceiling she wrote over and over 'If you can imagine it you can achieve it. If you can dream it you can become it." Dad was shocked... lol he couldn't understand why she would paint and then cover most of it up. Dad isn't into art.
The 2nd one made me gasp.. it is stunning... we are getting new windows in our house and I am going to save some of them... at least the ones with the old glass that hasn't been replaced over the years. I am going to find something to do with them.
Jrebel and start gave me some ideas... this one that you just showed me... my husband is building us a deck in the very back of our yard that is going to be enclosed in the back and on on side for privacy , one side is going to be exposed to our garage... which has a door much like the wood work on that window frame... he also built me a heart window box that is attached to a window on that side of the garage... I will find a way to paint some flowers on it or I will have a local art student paint if I can't paint something acceptable... Thank you so much I am so glad you posted that picture. Were there anymore on the site where you found that one?
The 3rd link said I was forbidden to look at it... lol don't know why though.
The last picture was very nice... I could see myself sitting there, of course I would want to wander out in those woods and see what was there... I bet there are tons of birds there.
Thank you Firmy for posting that lovely window.

Bushg, no, not snow, that's the spray I use. When looking at it in person you can't see the gloss of the spray, but the camera picks it up, I've tried everything. The spray protects the painting, so it's necessary, and like I said, not noticeable in person.
There is snow on the ground, three wolves, and tracks in the snow leading away from the wolves. What could it be that made those tracks? Perhaps a rabbit? ;)

That's gorgeous, bushg. I love that idea and have often had the same thought. Once or twice I've seen people working on prettying up areas near their homes and I imagine how satisfying it must feel. It's not uncommon in Japan where there are small shrines dotted everywhere, usually strewn with flowers and sometimes in the oddest places, like a footbridge or at the bottom of a waterfall in the middle of nowhere. We have a small round-about in our small street with its own patch of ground - I'm fairly sure the few flowers I've seen there are planted by a woman who lives in one of the opposite houses who spends a lot of time in her garden. Cute touch with the dog statue by the way :-)

Haha! You're reasonably safe Alty! ;) I thought I had brought it up that I'm a floral designer, and used to have my own shop and stuff. I think Firmy and Clough and a few others knew for sure, because we were all having a conversation one day. I think it was on the "these are amazing" thread.
I got a job as a receptionist/gopher, at a flower shop when I was really young, and after awhile, the owner started to let me make little things. I loved it, so I stuck with it.
Betcha all didn't know that I've been skydiving too did you! LOL! (I missed my mark, and almost landed on a cow once... hahaha!)

I've always been amazed at the Talent of this guy , he draws 3D crayon drawings on sidewalks. I'll see if I can find some more.

Both links were great Starby!! The first one reminded me so much of Emily, our Lab. We had one Lab, our first when the kids were little. We would go on a river that had rapids and when my niece would jump in on a rope swing in the deep part, Buck would jump in and she would get his tail as he swam out of the water, being her hero. How precious.
I wish I had a source of water in our front lawn, a little pond or such and could do the lights and play Christmas Carols as the water kept rhythm with the tunes. :)

I know!! Wouldn't that be so cooollll to have a mini version of something like that in the front yard for C'mas? Mind you, here the water might freeze mid air! LOL!
(I'm watching the CMA awards right now... lovin it! :D)... Rebby our numbers are off... quick... answer 700 questions or so! LOL! ;)

'The Thinker' is one of those classics we all love.
Here's a favourite statue of mine from the grounds of The Australian National University. She is the goddess Saraswati. The statue was a gift from the Indonesian government in 1969.

Much prettier than "The Thinker." I tried to attach the image like you

Sydney.

It's gorgeous Couchcarrot, and not a statue you ever tire of seeing. I'm from Sydney originally... did you have a chance to see the harbour? My sister and her husband are visiting their daughter in Cairns this Christmas. Do you work at the University in Louisville?
The image needs to be attached saved as a gif... if that helps.

No. I don't work there. My late dad graduated from there.
I did see the harbor in Sydney, but I was afraid to climb the bridge
Like some of the other tour members paid to do. I spent a lot
Of time at the Circle Quay. Which I pronounced K-W-A-Y
Until the concierge at the Wentworth Hotel corrected me and
Said it's pronounced KEY.

Circular Quay is nice for a stroll.. haven't been there in years. When my mum lived in Sydney we would always take the kids to Luna Park and eat lunch under the Harbour Bridge. Loved doing that. I haven't climbed the Harbour Bridge either... although I'd like do one day. My boyfriend has a real fear of heights, so I'll probably have to take my son with me.
Sorry to hear about your father passing. What did he graduate in?
I have a few things to organise (and remember) before leaving here in around an hour's time... enjoyed chatting with you. Hope you have a lovely Christmas day.
