My blower will shut off on it's own and then the ac unit freezes up. I try to turn the blower on in the manual on mode and it will not come on; after quite awhile it will come back on and then I have to wait for the ac unit to defrost. Any suggestions?

Could be a bad motor run cpacitor OR the motor itself is going bad.

If that is the case, how would I check each?

A capacitor checker is the only accurate way to check a capacitor.

They are cheap so it is sometimes easier to replace and try to see if it works to cure the problem.

To check the motor you will need a meter and check to make sure that the power to the motor is on and getting to the motor. If the power is going to the motor and the capacitor is good 9 times out of 10 the motor is bad.

Most folks do not have the proper tools to do this. But a Professional HVAC repair person will.
