I'm writing this on behalf of my boyfriend, actually. He's just hired a lawyer (specializing in family law, and also a Registered Nurse with past experience working in a mental institution) in order to get custody of his 2 1/2 year old daughter. We live together and so this directly involves me as well, which is why I'm writing.

I just wondered what we should look for or do in order to make our case as strong as possible. The mother has been institutionalized in the past and there have been incidents where it's been obvious that she can't physically take care of her daughter.

Prove he can provide a stable home and is financially secure.
Explain that he hasn't seen his child because she refuses to allow it.
Prove she can not take care of the child without help. That you can give her the care and attention.
