Hi, I have a question about changing your name with social security. I have a friend who got married in 1997, and moved out of state with her new husband. Shortly after, they split up. She came back home. Knowing that there would be a divorce, she never changed her name with social security, didn't see the sense in it. Now, her name on her drivers license is her married name, she changed that right away. She had been separated from her ex for over 10 years before he finally filed for divorce, she couldn't afford it herself. So now, she is divorced legally, and has been in a relationship for past 7 years, would like to get married this year. Just recently she went to renew her drivers license, and was unable to do so. When she gave them her social security number, the names did not match. My question is, what would be the easiest thing to do... Could she use her divorce decree to go to social security office, and change the name to her married name, then just change it again once she marries her current fiancé. She does not have her marriage license from 11 years ago, so the divorce decree is the only other legal document she could use in addition to her drivers license. Or would it be possible for them to just apply for a marriage license, would she have the same problem she had trying to renew her drivers license, with name not matching on ID and SSC. She would be applying at same courthouse she applied for her first marriage license, and with divorce papers in hand, would it maybe go through, as her maiden name would be on file for other marriage license?? Sorry, don't mean to be confusing, Just hoping someone knows. She tried calling the SS office, and said they were very rude, and she still doesn't know if her divorce decree will be sufficient as second form of ID and proof of her name.

Have her take whatever certified documents she has down to the SS office and speak to them in person. Phone calls don't cut it with them any longer as they want to see originals and nothing but originals. If her divorce paperwork is a "Certified Copy" with the clerk of court's official stamp on it, then it is an acceptable document for the SS people.
