You have to be EPA certified to dispense refrigerant/Freon.

I thought putting freon (which is not an environmental safe product) into an a/c had to be done by a professional for this very reason.

Yes I would question where they are able to even get the feon

Take the unit to a pro, the cost isn't that high, and most likely you will rin the unit if you attempt to charge it yourself.

FrChuck, I'm not sure how they get it, but they do. I had a guy the other day that put 4 cans on 134a in his heat pump, which you can buy at walmart, and some people assume that's what the are supposed to use.

Taking it to a shop would be best. I don't think you should try to use r-34 for automobiles in it. That's the only refrigerant that you can buy without a certificate now, I believe. I am sure that you could make an adapter to install the r34 with, but the system would need to be evacuated and the seals changed. It's probably not worth it.

I`m wondering,, how you know for sure it even needs freon,, they can get dirty and need a good professional cleaning,, and usually takes care of the problem with window units,, very, very seldom do they get low on freon

Usually when a window unit gets low on refrigerant you are better off throwing it away.

If you don't know what you're doing leave it alone. You could get yourself seriously hurt fooling with refrigerant of any kind without the proper gauges and some knowledge. I agree with hvacservicetech-07 throw it away. What you're are trying to do coulc be illegal as well good luck

Most window units are sealed systems
