Background: I am an international student on F1 visa in state of ca,I I had filed tax return for 2006 -07 one week before the last date on which I was supposed to get some money from the govt. For some reason , I found the mail back in my mailbox after the deadline apparently it never went to the tax office. Since the deadline was already gone , I felt no urgency in sending it. Then I found that people who have filed are also getting 300$ more from the govt this year.

Question: can I still file my tax returns, if I can what is the procedure and how much would I have to pay in fine

Thank you , your answers would enlighten me and many others in need, do spare a minute to answer if you know the solution

On F1 you must file nonresident tax return. On nonresident tax return, you will not get stimulus rebate of $300 to $600. Read this: Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/us-tax-filing-requirements-for-non.html)

Any on F1 who filed resident tax return and received stimulus rebate must return the rebate payment and file amended tax return. If they don't do it and get letter from IRS, they will also pay interest and penalty.

About your tax return. You must file your tax return. Just file, if you have any interest or penalty due, the IRS will send you a bill.

If you had a refund coming, then NO penalties or interest will be due.

Just file the return as soon as possible.
