View Full Version : 1/2 inch copper straight stops?

I am replacing the straight stops under my kitchen sink because I am redoing my kitchen and they need replacing. There are 1/2 inch OD copper lines that are coming up from the floor. I have been to Home Depot and Menards looking for stops for this size copper but I am not finding them. Do they exist or do I need to special order or do I need a reducer or am I just missing them when I look at the store?

Also, I would like to use compression fittings.

Typical 1/2" tubing is 5/8" in diameter.

When buying tubing parts, they will be 1/2". When buying compression parts, they will be 5/8. Check the pipe diameter again.

But if you are looking for a 3/4 copper elbow at a refrigeration sully house, you'll be buying a 7/8 elbow. At a plumbing store it will be 3/4. Confusing? Yes.

Just like a 2 x 4 is not 2" x 4".

KISS is correct in explaining all that he presented as 98% of the time homeowner's refer to tubing sizes incorrectly!

However, if you are absolutely sure that you have 1/2" OD copper tubing then you will need to go to the home improvement store or to the local plumbing supply house and pick up a pair of 1/2" compression x 3/8" compression straight stops in rough brass or in chrome.

This size copper tubing is usually reserved for dishwasher supply tubing... but some plumbers will run it to the sink as well.

I am absolutely sure that I have 1/2 inch OD copper. I have bought the 1/2 nom comp and they are too big. I have been to home depot and I cannot seem to find this part I need. I have also called plumbing supply and they don't have this either. I am going to give this other Home Depot a chance. I will use massplumbers suggestion and look for rough brass or chrome.

I will post back in a few hours.

Karl...

Be clear that there is 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 7/8" compression fittings (and even larger sizes)... you want the 1/2" compression valve..not the 5/8" compression.

And to make matters worse, I have noticed that the shutoff company that supplies home depot has now started to refer to the 5/8" compression stops as 1/2" nominal compression.. so be careful when choosing the shutoffs. As stated, you want the 1/2"OD compression stops...not the 1/2" nominal... BUT You know that now..don't you... ;)

The chrome or brass I mentioned only has to do with choice on the valve finish (chrome or brass)... so that will not help you in finding correct shutoff!

You would need a coupling plus a cap to go the compression route.
They have sweat fittings too.

Thanks for the heads-up. Guess education is worth something. The tubing/pipe thing is always misunderstood and when you throw in "refrigeration tubing" it gets even stranger.

Refrigeration tubing screwed me up more than 1 time in my life... let me tell you!

I'm out.. way out away from home depots, etc... and low and behold 1/2" OD tubing to a sink, and of course.. I don't carry stuff on my truck for that... so YUP! 1 hour and tons of gas later... I am back and fixing things... what a pain sometimes!

Anyway.. I carry them on my truck now... :)

Well, I went to Home Depot and bought some stuff on my lunch break. I will post back tonight with the real results.
I bought a 1/2" universal compression adapter to 3/8" MIP. Then I bought the straight stops 3/8" FIP to 3/8". Sounds simple, I hope.

I guess I should add the fittings that I am going to need for the dishwasher at this time also.
