Just installed a Hunter 44550 thermostat. Using White to W, Red to RH with RC jumpered , Green to G, and Yellow Y/Y1. Blue was not connected on the previous stat so it was left off in this install as well. When I have it switched to cool mode the AC works properly and the house is cool. When I switch to AUTO mode it displays cooling however it is running my heat. Any suggestions on what I should check? Faulty unit?

Yes it is in auto mode which on some thermostats will run both the heat and cool depending on conditions.

Your wiring looks correct.

The problem is the display says it is cooling in AUTO mode however its actually heating the house and temp is higher than cool setting.

It could be the thermostat. Never had much good to say about Hunter. It could also be where the wires art tied into the unit. The color code could be correct at the thermostat but that does not mean they are hooked up correctly at the unit itself. Is this a standard gas/oil heat with A/C?

Yeah, it's a standard setup. Wires were labelled as I pulled them off the old thermostat also verifying what they were on the old unit itself. Hunter customer support suggested the unit may be faulty. All the reviews I could find for this particular unit were very good which is why I went with it. I guess I shall see when the new unit arrives.

Any suggestions on a decent 7 day honeywell or white rodgers? I'm not looking for a high end model though. Sub $100. Found a honeywell 7 day on Amazon but it was about $25 more than the hunter and the reviews were not the friendliest. Someone also commented the white rodgers he had was cheaply built.

Problem solved. Replacement unit works perfect. The Hunter 44550 is a very easy to use unit that I would recommend to anyone.

The problem is there quality control is terrible. Keep there number handy. It is more than likely you will be calling them for another replacement soon. Good luck.

Thanks. Majority on Amazon seem to like this unit, but I will certainly keep an eye on it. If it works out and mine continues to work than I saved myself about 40 bucks. If not then I will take your recommendation and probably purchase the more expensive honeywell 7 day unit.

I understand. I have just been around the HVAC biz for way to many years and know what is good from bad. Good luck with your t-stat.

Yeah, that's what I keep hearing about my Directv receiver, my universal remote control, my a/v system and numerous other things too. All have been operational and flawless for years +. I guess I'll take my chances and treat the family to an Outback Steakhouse dinner with the money I saved. Maybe that saying someone's junk is someone else's treasure is actually true.
