Welcome to AMHD. Either: 1) because your question has only six words; or 2) because we (each of us) wants to be right. I don't know about psychologists, but I call it the 'theory of justification'.

To expand our minds and helps us to think outside of the box.
It makes you think about new things and challenge opinions that have always been told to you as the truth.

I believe every human creates their own philosophy. Some are simple, others are incredibly complex. All help that single person understand the physical reality they find themselves in.

Think of it as a framework to gauge the relative merit of anything we encounter during our lives. It becomes our frame of reference, and inevitably, the filter through which we view and judge the world.
