I was in an accident and have begun a claim with my insurance co. I have a suspended license (from unpaid ticket) and my plates were expired (long story!) Can or will these factors affect my claim and coverage? Thank you very much.

What State?

In some States you cannot legally obtain liability insurance on an illegal auto, one that is not road worthy - which would be one that is not registered. Also depends on the company. Does your policy have some sort of language that the vehicle must be "legal?"

Collision insurance is different.

If you didn't have a driver's license it shouldn't effect your insurance - but it certainly will be a factor if you ever attempt to get insurance again.

I would definitely get an attorney involved with your case as your insurance company may decide to decline coverage for your accident altogether having no license and no proper registration. They'll try anything to get out of paying a claim.

The insurance company can deny the claim for either factor in some states, not having a valid license, means you were basically committing a crime to drive ( a misdemeanor in some states) and they do not have to pay for the claims if there was criminal activity invovled. They will sometimes pay the claims of people who you may have hurt, the liablity part, but deny the claims you have. I would go into this assuming they will deny, But all you can do is file and if they deny then get an attoreny to see if they can help
