Hi

I am a Canadian teacher in Korea, and this is my first time being exposed to co-teaching. I am required to co-teach with a local Korean teacher of English at a public primary school, with classes as big as 35 students each.

I need some helpful tips and strategies on co-teaching, and I appreciate if anyone can assist me or point me to the right direction (websites) on this new teaching methodology.

Thank you.

Hi, esl,
I was a teacher, many years ago, for 13 years, before making a career change.
By co-teaching, do you mean there will be two teachers to the class of 35 students? If so, I also was involved many years ago with the same type of thing, involving two of us. It's really nothing new.
The most important thing is to have a good relationship with your co-teacher. Planning together is of the utmost importance. Knowing who will do what on each day, say for 5 days planning, will help keep things running smoothly.
You can also divide the students, if you will be offereing any extra-help time.
I do wish you the best.

Hi Fredg

Thanks for your advice.

Yes, there 2 of us for the class - me as the native speaker and the other is the local non-native teacher. It's a 1 day lesson, and even though we get along professionally, who is doing what?
e.g..
1. Do 1 do 50% of the lesson and she does the other 50%?
2. Do I take the lead and she does the translation?
3. Do I take the lead and she only maintain the class discipline?
4. Do I let her take the lead and I intervene at certain points to emphasizes the grammar, verbs, etc.

Please further comment on this based on your experience.
Thanks.

I have been involved with co-teaching for 2-years. I love it! We work together on every thing. We plan on a two-week schedule then decide what each of us should do. She is more hands-on and I like to pull everything together for the lessons. It works great. Also if one of us has to be out for a day or two it still goes smoothly.
