Does anyone know how to size an overflow hole in a sink? I'm looking for the actual calculation. This is a question I was recently asked and I can't figure this out for the life of me.

Hi Aaron,
If you're asking about the waste openings in lavatories they cone in different shapes and sizes. Some are a small round hole, some are slots and some lavatories don't have them at all. There is no standard size so there can be no "actual calculation". Regards, Tom

But there does have to be some minimum area requirement for the overflow holes, right? Without this minimum area (whether it be slotted, circular, etc), the sink would fill faster than the overflow could drain. And since all sinks do not feed water at the same rate, thus varying overflow hole sizes would result.

But there does have to be some minimum area requirement for the overflow holes, right? Not that I know of. Lookup at my last post that I made the letters bold. Vessel sinks do not have overflows and now some contractors are installing lavatories without overflows in new dwellings.
