I just moved into a brand new house 2 months ago. I have never noticed the sump pump running (I don't have a yard yet so I mean that I never noticed the ground beneath the discharge being wet). About 3 weeks ago I had my sewer back up into the basement, the builder said it was due to someone excavating and breaking my line, the problem has since been fixed. The past few days I have noticed a considerable amount of water outside under the discharge. Could this be related in some way? If not, is this something I should be concerned about? Why would it all of a sudden be kicking on when it never has before?
Thanks!

Have you had a lot of rain lately? I don't know how much water was involved in your back up but could some of it got under the cement and saturated the soil and your sump pump is drying it out? If it were a raise in the ground water your next door neighbor should be pumping also. Have you checked to see? Does the water in the pit smell? If everything else is OK I would adopt a "wait and see" attitude. Good luck, Tom
