The fan is new Hampton Bay (Florentine IV) with a 4 speed wall mounted control. The contractor did not wire the fan to the wall mount control. He installed a Hampton Bay 3 remote control. The fan worked on low and medium then shut off at high speed. The contractor thought the remote was faulty so he replaced it. Again the fan worked on low and medium. We decided not to operate in on high for fear it would again shut off. The fan does not reverse, so we did not operate it all winter long. With the warm weather we used once. It turned on and off with the remote. No problem. The next time we tried to use it, it didn't work at all. I was replacing a ceiling fan in another part of the house. I couldn't tell what breaker I should shut off, so I was doing it by trial and error. When I came from the basement, the kitchen fan was running. I was able to shut it off with the remote but could not turn it on again. I tried flipping the breaker to see it I could make it come on again. No luck
Note: The original fixture was a chandelier operated by a wall switch. I replaced that with a pull chain ceiling fan that reversed.

First of all, try installing the fan with the control it came with, rather than the remote, and see if everything works.
