I live in sc. In February, I moved into an apartment with another girl and her son. I paid 60 less a month than she, and she explained it as her having a child, she should pay more. I thought this was quite nice of her, and it turned out to be she changed the situation from us being roommates to my merely renting a room (her name is the only one on the lease). We rarely got along, and this resulted in her sending me a text on April 2nd, telling me she wanted me out in 30 days. Later that evening she apologized and asked me to stay. Things escalated, and in the middle of the month, I told her I would be gone by the end of the month. I left a week later. In moving so quickly, several of my belongings and furntiture remained there. When I asked a convenient time to pick it up, she and her fiancé told me when I paid them their money, I would be able to get my things. She kept changing the amount I owe her. First it was 96, then 296, and now 348. I owe her 96 dollars for april's utilities, but anything beyond this I dispute, she now claims she has filed court papers, and I can get my things. I never signed anything when I moved in, and everything is still in her name. I don't agree I should pay for months I never lived there, and she held my things. She alleges that I owe her money, as she was unable to rent the room out because of my things, but she prevented me from getting them, which is rather illegal in sc, as the deputies in our town tell me. What are my options? If I legally owe her, I have no problem paying, but I refuse to pay her what I don't owe.

Send her a letter saying that if she does not arrange a date with you for you to get your property immediately then you call the police and file a complaint against her for theft. Then tell her to prepare a written, detailed list of what she believes that you owe and you will pay her the valid charges.
