I Have A Leak In My Kitchen Which Is Over Bathroom. What Would Cause This.

Any signs of a leak in the bathroom? Check the sink and toilet, if not it must be a pipe or drain in the floor which will require opening up the ceiling to find out what it is.

Let me get this straight, the kitchen is above the bathroom. If this is the case no leak in the bath will show up in your kitchen. Do we have you correct?

I actually read it as the bath being above the Kitchen, but after re-reading it that is what it sounds like ballenger. Which is it?

I'm going to run with the idea that the bathroom is above the kitchen and I would have Casss check the following:

1) Check under sink at shutoffs and at the toilet shutoff for any leaks. Use tissue paper to wipe the pipes... see if becomes wetted. If paper becomes wetted, investigate further. Also run water during this test and check the drain at the sink.

2) Check that the toilet does not rotate or rock back and forth when pushed on. Also flush the toilet and check around the base of toilet as well as the connections between the toilet tank and the toilet bowl.

3) Next, if no obvious stuff, check at the tub/shower valve. First, remove the tub/shower valve handle and trim plate and then run the tub and the shower. Use a flashlight and look in behind the wall and see if any water is dripping from the valve or from above from the shower head.

If nothing obvious after that... need to know if you have a tile tub surround.. If so, what shape are the grout lines in?

Need to know if you have had any visitors lately that may have allowed water to get from tub/shower and onto the floor when taking a shower.. Also want to check in front of the tub/shower around the floor and see if there are any spots that water could fall down in between and leak to downstairs.. if even questionable, would need to caulk this area with a mildew resistant caulking!

Lastly, for now, any children coming of teenage years.. Sounds silly, I know, but about 30% of the calls I get like this are teenagers that just don't understand or just don't care that water is spilling all over the floor.

I swear, I just had another person ask this question... person said, not possible. 3 days later came back in and told me a teenager that was visiting was the issue and confirmed it by watching the leak come back every time they took a shower... ;)

That is a start...let me know if in fact the kitchen is above the bathroom. If that is the case, pretty much look for leaks as indicated for bathroom. If nothing obvious, probably need to open ceiling as AMRICCA SAID... :)
