I'm 27 y/o female. I had been on Birth Control Pills for 10 years and went off them in mid Feb. I had my normal scheduled period from Birth Control Pills Feb 12th and it ended on Feb 17. A normal period. It's now 3.5 months later and I haven't had a period! I hear that it's normal to have a delayed period after being on Birth control pills for so long, but is 3.5 months really NORMAL? I went to the doctor and she gave me PROMETRIUM to Jump start me. I took 400 mg of Prometrium for 10 days but it did not work. I had no period from that. I now have gone back to the doctor and she is trying something else: she gave me Premarin to apparently help build up a lining, and I have to take that for 2 weeks, and then I have to take prometrium again after the Premarin is done to see if I get a period that way. Hopefully this works! I'm only 3 days into it. One thing I question is my weight. When I started Birth Control, I was 17 years old and weighed about 125 lbs. (I'm 5'3) I was getting normal periods before birth control. Over the past 10 years, I became a vegetarian, and got more into nutrition, exercise and health, and my weight is now about 106-109 lbs (this is my weight completely naked. My weight is usually around 111-114 WITH clothes/shoes). Do you think that I am too underweight? I look thin, but not emancipated. I exercise, but not excessively. I mostly just walk. Every once in a while I'll go for a run. I walk about an hour in the morning, and an hour in the evening, but that's it. I eat balanced meals. I make sure to get adequate protein in my diet, and I take a B complex and iron supplement. I started keeping track of my calories to see how much I was taking in and it came out to be about 1200-1250 Monday through Friday (during the work week). About 2,000-2,500 during the weekends. (I usually go out to breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings and go out to dinner as well). Do you think my diet and body weight have anything to do with my periods not returning? Or do you think that it's just a result of being on the birth control pill for so long and eventually it will come? I'd appreciate your advice!

I think that since you are in the process of seeing a Dr for this problem you should present the question to her/him. I would say yes. It most likely has a lot to do with your weight. However, to be sure be your own advocate with your Dr. and press to have some different tests run. Some people stay on the pill because it helps regulate the cycle. You may be one of those people that needs to take it to get a regular period. The sooner you inquire the better you will be. Sounds like your Dr has some ideas and is on the right track. Good Luck

I have the exact problem. I got off the pill in Feb and I had my period in Feb but I have not had one since. I have taken multiple pregnancy test, all are negative. So I called my doctor and he does not want to see me until it has been another month.

For your height, 106 lbs does not sound unreasonable, but I'm by no means an expert (especially as I am 5'10 myself). Aside from your weight, your fat intake could be something to consider. Too little body fat could affect menstration, but that's for your doctor to determine by your individual physiology.

I can tell you that birth control does some wacky things once you stop taking them. In my case, I was also on for 10 years before I stopped. My first cycle was 33 days, the next was only 18. It took 5 months to get into a normal routine and the month I became pregnant, it was stranger than ever. I've heard even worse stories than yours, so hang in there. The best thing you can do is continue seeing your doctor and bring up your concerns with her.

Good luck!
