I use Windows XP , AOL 9.0SE. I was previously using the pay-for McAfee security system, before realizing that was unnecessary. So now I'm using only the free AOL Security System from McAfee. In the AOL sign-up window, it indicates that the firewall is "not detected." However, when going into the Security System site, it says my computer is protected, and that both virus protection and firewall are installed and enabled. I don't understand the discrepancy, nor do I know what to do about it.

First, I would suggest moving away from AOL. That being said I would double check that your Windows Firewall is on. To do this:

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
2. Double-click on the Firewall icon
3. In the Windows Firewall window make sure the On (recommended) radio button is selected
4. Click OK

As long as you have that radio button selected your Windows Firewall is on, even if AOL is not detecting it your computer is protected.
