Hi,

I have been married to a portuguese citizen for 5 years now. I am a South African citizen. We live in the UK. Can I obtain Portuguese citizenship as I am married to her? If so how to I go about it? I have been trying to obtain info from the Portuguese consulate but have not had any luck yet.

Thanks

Normally overseas marriage does not allow you to gain citizenship, unless you and your spouse are moving back to her country. Besides, she must be the one who contact the Portuguese consulate, not you.

Yes, you are eligible to obtain the Portuguese citizenship as spouse because you are married to her for over 3 years.

I advise you to seek a lawyer to assist you because the procedure to obtain the Portuguese citizenship as spouse is complicated due to the bureaucracy of the Portuguese government. Even the Consulates advise the applicants to seek a lawyer.

I hope I have helped.
