I have been remodeling my master bath now for a few weeks and today, all of a sudden, I started to smell "propane" or something like that in my living room. I walked around the house looking for the source and when I opened my bedroom door I was overwhelmed with this stench. I followed it straight to bathroom and found it to be coming from the hole where my toilet once was! I have looked online many places but nothing seems to fit my problem. I went to my crawlspace to look for damged pipes or something but found nothing. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciatied!!

The toilet is usually what prevents sewer gases from entering your home through the 3 inch pipe that it drains into. So now that there is no toilet there sewer gases are coming in. When faced with this problem I usually stuff a rag down into the pipe to seal it. Just be sure to leave enough of the rag sticking out so you can remove it before reinstalling your toilet. If I missed anything post back and let me know. GOOD LUCK, AC

Thanks... I had a rag stuffed in there already but it obviously isn't in there well enough. It was very hot today so I think that might be why I just now smelled it. I will think of something! It rained earlier and after the smell seemed to go away... we will see what happens tomorrow at high noon ha ha!

I was overwhelmed with this stench. I followed it straight to bathroom and found it to be coming from the hole where my toilet once was! Are you saying after the toilet was removedthe closet bend was never capped off? If that's so you have a direct connection between your home and the city sewer allowing sewer gas to enter your home. This must be looked after at once. If there will never be another toilet in that space then stuffing rags down the opening isn't going to completely seal it off. I would fill that closet bend with cement and floor over it. Don't let this slide!! Sewer gas is a health hazard to your family and the methane content makes it explosive. Fix it now! Good luck, Tom

Adrenaline , when I posted I was assuming you were putting a toilet back in the near future is that correct ? If I misread and no toilet is going back there then speedballs advice is dead on. The rags are only temporary while you are waiting to replace the toilet
Either way find a way to keep those sewer gases out.
