I'm using AOL with a download speed of up to 8Megs, I've noticed that the speed of my Internet experience is getting slower.

I use a Netgear router DG834G router connected over cable to the main PC

I'm only getting 1.2-2.3Megs on the speed testers, how can I chk the capabilities of my line

I do know AOL did some work in the exchange that services my area and since then my connection is occasionally intermittent and the speed is toss.

Has AOL been bought by carphone warehouse?

Any help appreciated

I used to get same thing but disconnecting and reconnecting fixes it. I think they have a queue system so that people who are connected for days don't eat up all the bandwidth of people who login subsequently. In my case I used to get just disconnected and I can't login for days (funnily enough only when I used to use a netgear dg814 which is same as your but without wifi)

But as you mentioned it could just be a bad line, you can get BT to check but it will probably take a number of visits for them to notice a problem :(

And AOL have been owned by CPWH for nearly 2 years now :P

Frisp, you should know better than using AOL ;)

Get a decent connection and you'll see the difference.

A good site to check your lines capabilities is here: Samknows Broadband - Broadband Availability Checker (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php)

Have a look at what BT offer and add some for a decent service.

If you want an accurate test of your down and up speeds give this a try: Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/)

It's a bit picky when it will run, but I find it excellent.
