I was born in Germany. I have my original Birth Certificate. I am now a permanent resident of USA since 1956 (and have a permanent residency card). I want to travel (for pleasure only from time to time) out of the US and need a passport in order to leave and re-enter the US. How do I go about getting a German Passport? What other documents do I need? My parents are both deceased but have all my mothers papers (she also was born in Germany, but later became a US Citizen).

Look online for the German consolute and ask them what requirements you need.

First of all, check if you mother has denounced German citizenship by the time she became US citizen. If so... then you are no longer German citizen.

Second, if you mother became US citizen before you reached the age of 16, you automatically became US citizen. If this is the case, all you have to do is apply for certificate of citizenship from USCIS and you will be eligible to obtain US passport.

If the above do not apply to you... then contact the nearest German consulate to get your passport done.
