In the 80's my sister and I read (and really enjoyed) this book. We've been trying to remember the title for years.

The main character was very sad (don't remember why). Every night he would dream of a better place, the same each time. Eventually he spends more time dreaming and his dream world becomes his reality. (I think) he dies in this (his original) world.

An interesting twist was that souls travel together through different lives. In his dream-world, he dreams about certain people who he grows to love. One in particular, turns out to be his mother from his original world, who explains how it all works.

Anybody remember a book like that?

It actually sounds a lot like the plot of "Brazil" - but since that was an original screenplay by Tom Stoppard and Terry Gilliam we can eliminate that!

I've read that too but I'll be jiggered if I can remember the name! Sorry! Let me know if you find it- it's a lovely story.
