I am lost as to what to do. The GM and Sales and Maint along with nearly everyone else left my place of employment at the same time. I know for a fact that it was all orchestrated because they tried to involve the entire staff. I stayed and am now the only manager. The owner of our establishment is trying to get together a case against the managers that left for everything he can find. A piece of equipment is missing and he wants to sue, uniforms not returned, he wants to sue, AR accounts not up to date, he wants to sue. I just don't know what all he would actually have a case for. We are doing investigation into the AR, our accounts are claiming to have paid when we have no records. Meeting space double booked, supplies were left to completely run out, just bad blood from them. I don't agree with what these people did and am obligated to the employer to help him get "evidence" together. Supposedly, our owner was told by police and attorneys that he has a case. I just don't know. Can an employee be held responsible for lost items without signing an agreement? Should I in turn sign the agreements he wants me to after knowing how crazy he can get??

It can depend on where this is. If for example they were assigned certain equipment and they lose it, they can be held accountable for it.
For my company I have a truck that I drive, and in it, up to 20,000 in equipment on some days, normally maybe 2000 in equipment, If all of this equipment just disappeared, of course they could hold me liable if I did not have a reason, or at least a report of it being stolen or something

Well, the GM wouldn't be responsible for the pressure washer Maint uses. He's trying to prove some sort of conspiracy (which I do believe there was but that's seperate). THey didn't sign an agreement or anything and now he wants me to sign that I will be held liable for missing or damaged equipment from other departments.

This guy sounds like a loose cannon and I suspect if you don't get out now you are going to become part of his conspiracy theory.
I once worked for someone who was CONVINCED the office was bugged (and trust me, it wasn't true - nobody cared much what was going on) and spent most of her time writing notes instead of speaking, making calls from public phone booths, thumping on walls, looking behind drapes, rummaging through wastepaper baskets. I realized that if I didn't get out she would think I was part of the grand conspiracy to bug her life.
