I currently have a tub/shower combo with a liner (must be 25+ years old). I'm going to rip everything out and install tile, new shower and tub faucet and new rough in valve. I'm just looking for some expert advice or tips on how I should go about doing everything. I figure do my due diligence now instead of when I'm knee deep in the project. I plan on removing all the old drywall and putting up hardibacker, good/bad idea? Can the hardibacker go right on studs then tiles on that? Or do I need green board behind it?

Current conditions:
Vinyl liner
3 knob faucet control
Sliding glass door

New:
Ceramic tile (12"x12") up to ceiling
Single know faucet control
Sliding glass door

Any thoughts or tips are greatly appreciated.

Ok I'm going to try to find you a link to Patty who just did all of the same work. I recommend a Swanstone model 3260 retro fit for your situation, about $250. Its perfect for converting a tub into a shower and yes go with Hardibacker scewed and glued directly to the studs. Sterling bypass shower door would run about $400 and I'd pick a Moen or Delta single handle mixing valev, another $200. Adds up quick and this doesn't buy your tile or modified thinset and grout. You'll be over $2k before you know it.
