Here is what is - and what is not - allowed by collection agencies:

They threaten all sorts, but as debt is a CIVIL matter the police will not get involved.

In most cases, true. In many states recorded calls can be used in court. If the harassing calls continue, record them and report the agency to the State Attorney General (If you are in the US).

Debtor's prison died out in the 19th century. The police will not get involved in collecting a debt. For a collector to make such threats violates the law.

Go to the website for the National Association of Consumer Advocates, National Association of Consumer Advocates – Consumer Protection Advocates and Attorneys (http://www.naca.net), and see if someone there will advise you.

If they are threatening you like that, they are in violation of the FDCPA and could be just digging themselves in deeper and deeper, as they do not usually do things like that just one time.

You have rights. Do not let them abuse you.

They will threaten to throw you in jail, they will threaten to take your car away, they will threaten to kill your dog, and more. All they can do is sue you. Since they are doing all of this, write them and tell them not to contact you by phone any longer.
