Need to have more of a description of (a) setup or (b) What you are trying to do.
Your question needs more context.

You can have a load controlled from n+2 locations, but two 3-way and n 4-way switches are required. N = 0,1,2,3,. inf
Only 2 3-way switches are need, anymore you then have to use 4 way switch.
Say you got a hall light, you wanted to control the light from the top of the stairwell and the bottom of the stairwell as well as the front entrance of the house.
This will require 2 3ways and a 4 way switch. There always ONLY 2 3-ways switches and if more switches are required then you will need a 4 way switch for each location.
(e.g)A light will be control from 6 differernt locations, u need 2 3-ways, and 4 4ways switches.

Fye, the question is over a year old.
Please refrain from answering questions older than a couple of months.
Althou, I did get a kick out of Don's comments. Got to wonder sometimes. Question seemed simple enough to me.
