It can be used as PART of the whole security setup on any router, not to be relied upon as the only security measure.

For WiFi you should also include WPA encryption and hidden SSID.

This covers the basics: Wireless Security - WiFi Wireless Home Network Security Tips (http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelesssecurity/tp/wifisecurity.htm)

The easiest and simplest to do is to encrypt your wireless traffic with WEP

Here's a indepth list of things to do: Securing your Wireless Network (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/wireless_secure.htm)

There are a few ways you can use MAC filtering. If you want to NOT allow some computers on your network access to the Internet, you can disallow these addresses. Or, you can specify what MAC addresses are allowed to have Internet access. This will stop "Guest" access.
