If I have a plans for construction for a driveway and walkways and on the set of plans there are different elevation number for example: 44.06 to 45.73 how do I read this in inches? I hope that I make sense.

Assuming that your plan is already in feet, then take the fraction part of the number and multiply it by 12 to get inches.

e.g. 45.73... take the 0.73, multiply by 12 and you get 8.76". So that is 45' 8.76" off your reference height

You can keep going too to get into 16ths of an inch. e.g. 8.76 inches... take the .76 and multiply by 16 to get 12.16. So that is 45' 8and12.16/16th inches

If you wanted to measure in 32's instead, take the .76 and multiply by 32 to get 24.3... so 45' 8 and 24.3/32".

You can round each of these off to be basically a couple of hairs over 45' 8 and 3/4"
