My air conditioner went out yesterday and I had a friend come buy with a multimeter and determined that it was because I wasn't getting 220 to the air conditioner.

He then found a breaker that was bad and told me to get one like it. The bad model I had was Bryant and had a 50 50 on the top and BR250 on the bottom. I then went to the hardware store and found a different manufacture but the fuse looked the same and had the BR250 on the bottom and 50 50 on the top.

I spoke with another customer (electrician shirt) and said he was an electrician. He said that I don't have to get the exact manufacture if it's not available. He said that as long as the BR250 and the 50 50 on the top match and the size is correct it will work.

I had my friend install it and the air works fine now. I just want to make sure that it's safe to use a different manufacture when the correct breaker from the correct company is not available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Legit answer
All circuit breakers must be UL/CSA listed for use in the brand/model of breaker box it is being used in.

Regular answer. Many times circuit breakers will work in different boxes because many of the same boxes are made by one company with different names. I think you should be fine.
