I have had my cat now for 2.5 years, and ever since she was about four months old she started peeing outside her litter box. We took her to the vet and the vet said is was behavioral and we tried several things (more litter boxes, cleaned them almost after every use, putting her in her box every 2-4 hours). This worked for a while, however, around one she started doing it again and the methods did not work. She then had a UTI we treated her for that and for about 6 months she was "cured". Than she started again, this time behavioral, and now at 2.5 years she had yet again another UTI (at the beginning of April) she stopped urinating outside her box until last week. She has been urinating everywhere --bed, blankets, couch, clothes, carpet --even in plastic bags. We just took her to the vet and its once again behavioral. My fiancée is fed up with her behavior and I am getting extremely frustrated too. He wants to give my cat to the shelter, or worse, put her down --however, I can't do either of those since I don't want her being in a shelter trapped in a cage than go to a family that may not treat her right... she is my baby --and putting her down is just not an option. I am desperatly needed any ideas on how to stop this (and I have tried the odor/stain removers, used vinegar, tinfoil, lemon scents)

I have to admit I've never been great at solving problems of going outside the box, other than making sure there's a box near-by, like several in the house. Except when it's been a medical problem. (In which case we solve the medical problem.) Since it's been going on such a long time, obviously it's not some kind of change you made. Although she could perhaps hate the litter you're using. And is there any reason she'd have difficulty getting into the box?

Mostly I posted cause I have other comments. It's a little odd for a young female cat to keep getting UTI's like that. That to me is indicative of some underlying issue going on, and I would think your vet would be trying to discover what that is. Speaking of which, you might want to get a second opinion. It's possible the UTI's are still related to this. This reminds me of how you call the internet provider and they insist it's user error or the modem, and you call the modem people and they insist it's the internet provider. Ad nauseum.

I'm glad you're not ready to give up, though I understand this would be frustrating. Another reason is that a new family would not want her doing this either. Any time someone wants to give up a cat due to problems like this, they never think about the fact that a new owner isn't going to want the problem anymore than you do. A cat with a problem like that just ends up never finding a permanent home, which certainly isn't the best life.

As for the odor, Nature's Miracle is the one I've preferred. Don't know what you've tried.
