Hi All - can any of you help with my conundrum?
I was born in India and moved to the UK in 1974. I acquired British citizenship through my father. I never registered as a Brit whilst in the UK. I now live and work in the USA (since 2005, so I lived in the UK for 31 years). My wife and I had our son in the US (so he is American) but I'd also like for him to have British citizenship. When we applied for his passport it was rejected because he is apparently 2 generations removed from citizenship through his grandfather.
We've been told we can register his birth so he can claim citizenship if he lives in the UK for 3 years... this is OK but I'd prefer he had a British passport.
Can I register myself as British now (even though I've been in the US for three years) and then perhaps reapply for his passport even though I now live outside the UK? I'll then have a registration certificate I assume?
Please help with my conundrum!!
