For the last few months we've noticed the wall in our bedroom getting wet and moldy from the inside. We realized that a water pipe must have broken within the wall and is now leaking. We want to break open the wall and fix the pipe by ourselves since we cannot afford a professional. How exactly can we locate the leak once we open the wall? The area on the wall that is wet is about three square feet and we would rather not break all that wall just to find the leak. If , however, we must break the wall we want to know how we should go about it and how to find the leak on the pipe.
PLease help soon since right now we have a hole in our wall.

I'm afraid the there is no way to find the leak other than open the wall and start looking. If it is a horizontal pipe that is leaking, the leak can be where you see the damage or it can be some distance away, as water will tend to cling to the pipe and follow it to a low point. If the leaking pipe is a vertical one. The leak can be anywhere above the damaged area, even on the next floor.

Maybe you will get lucky and the leak will be close to the damaged area but all you know now is that the leak is at, or above the level you see the moisture.
