My father in law rents a unit for his Autobody and Paint repair shop in Lancaster Ca 93536. He was just informed today that he had 30 days to pack up and leave from his unit. He was also just informed today that the previous landlord sold all the units to another landlord and that new landlord is the one that gave him and at least 2 dozen more renters that also own auto shops 30 days to leave. That makes it impossible for everyone to leave the businesses they own in such short notice. What rights do they have and how can they go about handling this? How can they legally extend the 30 days notice?

Does your father-in-law have a written lease? If so then the terms of the lease control the situation. If the lease allows the landlord to terminate with 30 days notice then your father-in-law has no choice.

If your father-in-law does not have a written lease then he is a month-to-month tenant and the landlord has the right to terminate the tenancy with 30 days written notice.
