I have a 3 speed ceiling fan. The medium and slow speeds seem to work OK but the fast speed setting runs somewhere between slow and medium. Could it be a switch problem or the speed controller? I'm pretty sure it is a Hampton Bay. Sure hate to replace a $200 fan when I can repair it.

Well, if your sure the medium and slow are correct, then the switch is suspect.

There is a capacitor with 3 leads and two values. The highest is medium. The lowest is slow.
When they are in parallel it's the highest speed. If you replaced both, your looking at may be $25. See CeilingFanParts.com Home (http://www.ceilingfanparts.com)

KISS, this is the case with some fans, but not all.

Is it a remote fan? If not, how are the speeds controlled?

If it is a remote fan, then it is the receiver. If it is pullchain, it is most likely a capacitor, possibly the pullchain. If it is a wall control, it depends on the type.

Report back with more details.

Hi ceilingfanrepair,

I'm picking up on this old thread because it relates to my current problem. My 3-speed Hunter fan (25747) only works on slow speed. It is remote controlled with no manual switch (chain). Is this the receiver? If so is this part replaceable and where may I find it?

Thank you
