I agreed to a one year lease for student housing for a University in California for next year. I am now no longer able to attend the school and student housing is saying that they have no policy on breaking the lease and that even though I am not a student there I will still have to pay the entire year. I was under the impression that I could break the lease without paying the full amount. Is this true? Is there a CA civil code law that states that I can break my lease?

A lease is a contract which you signed (I assume when you say you "agreed" to a lease that you actually signed one).

Unless the lease specifies some other arrangement you are bound by the terms for the remainder of the lease. What does the lease say?

I am not aware of any California law that would allow you to break the terms of a contract.
