Hey,

I am canadian with a canadian born child but her father is american. For the past 4 months she has been receiving child tax benefits from the government. We are planning on moving to the U.S with my boyfriend (my baby's father) in a few months and we are applying for her american passport, but I'm only going on a student visa.

My question is: am I still qualified to receive her child tax benefits? When am I no longer considered as a "canadian resident"? And can I still claim her even if she stays with her father and I go back to canada?

What you are receiving is Family Allowance designed to assist families in expenses incurred for babies. It was started in l945 by the way and for obvious reasons, the war, etc. was quite necessary at the time to get young families back on their feet.

You will always be a Canadian citizen, as your child will be, and I believe you will still receive that benefit until your child is l8 no matter where you live.
