Hello, I am taking a course to improve my job skill sets, and I am paying for this out of pocket. Can this expense be considered a tax deductible item for next year's tax season?

Also, will a letter from the trainer stating that I paid xx amt towards the course be sufficient proof, if this expense is tax deductible?

I really would like to make this expense tax deductible and I am sure the trainer might work with me if there is any kind of form he would be required to fill. So please do share this information, if can help.

Thanks for your time in reading this.

If you are not an employee or self employed person, then you can't deduct it.

If you are an employee, the training must be intended to improve your skill for your job. Then you can deduct it as employee business expenses as itemized deduction. This is subject to 2% AGI rule.

If you are a self employed person and you are getting training to improve you skill for your business, then you can deduct it on schedule C.
