I am awaiting my visa interview with the us embassy in london, my fiance's application in the us has been approved. I have been told that once I marry there, I cannot return to the UK under any circumstances for 2 years is this right as I have an elderly mother and this concerns me

I married my fiancé in the states and I had to pass another interview with immigration( as a spouse this time) before being able to come back to Italy. If you leave before your interview , they might not let you come back because you will need a stamp that the immigration officer is going to put in your passport after that interview. I waited 15 months for my appointment but it doesn't usually take that long. They lost all my paperwork from italy so I had to resend everything and it took forever. It normally takes 6-8 months.

After you submit the application to adjust your status, if you have emergency situation and need to return to your home country, you can travel after getting Advance Parole approved. This document will allow you to leave and return to US without hassle.

When you file I-485 to adjust your status, it's always advised that you file I-765 (work permit) and I-131 (advance parole or travel document) at the same time as it might take up to 10-12 weeks for I-765 & I-131.

At present it takes about 6-8 months to receive your green card.

You don't need to apply for your work permit, being married to an US citizen automatically authorizes you to work once your I-485 is approved.

Waiting for approval of I-485 could take months, and in many cases, almost a year, prior to the year 2006, it took 2 years.

If you can wait, it's fine, but for those would prefer to be able to get SSN and driver's license, so they drive, work, open a bank account, etc. as soon as possible, this is the answer.
