Are they going to charge you as a adult or as a juv. If you are being tried as a adult, ( and at 17 you will be in many states) and if you are found guilty or plead guilty you will have a record unless you have some presentening diversion program.
You should have an attorney to look at your case and represent you.
*** this is assuming you are in the US.

I think they should try you as an adult. If it was "only 30 bucks worth of stuff" was it worth taking? Do you know what happens to the economy when people steal? It's a DRAIN on it, it causes the price of EVERYTHING to go up, to compensate for losses! And then they have to put you through the legal system which uses our tax money! Have you learned your lesson? Anyway to answer your question, it DOES depend on whether they try you as an adult or a juvenile. If you plead guilty, you may just get probation, community service and pay restitution and it will go on your record as a misdemeanor.
