I have read over some of the posts and did not find an answer to my question. I have quit smoking cold turkey 3 times before, but after about 24-48 hours into I get a nervous tick in my right eye. I have a tooth that is in need of a canal soon, and it will just throb when I do not smoke. I get emotional and anger easily, the anger I expected, but all the other stuff I did not. A nervous tick! As soon as I smoke it all goes away. I smoke about a pack day and have been for four years.
This has made cold turkey very hard for me. Is my body that addicted to nicotine? And what can I do stop the tic? I can honestly say I can deal with the not smoking especially if I stay busy, I mean I do not crave that badly, but how long with the other annoying and painful withdrawl symptoms last?

Try the nicotine patches and slowly get your body used to less nicotine that might help with the tick and the emotional side if it doesn't talk with your doctor and get that tooth out asap

Maybe I should try those, and what is crazy is I never knew I had a toothache until I stopped smoking.

There are many great medications out that can help you quit, go to your doctor and get a prescription, while you are there tell him about the symptoms you get when you quit cold turkey. If you find something that works, tell me, I'm trying to quit too. :)
Good Luck.

Dr. Wayne Dyer in his audio series suggests that each time you light up a cigarette you say either to yourself or outloud "I am not a smoker". Sounds funny, but it works. It's done by sugesting to your mind that you are not a smoker. Don't worry if you believe it or not but keep saying it over and over each time you light up and pretty soon the cravings will go away. A friend of mine listened to my suggestion about this and she has totally quit. I quit 30 years ago. I pretended I was on the subway in NYC where you could not smoke and kept saying to myself that I was on the subway and could not light up a cigarette and smoke. It was hard to give up but I did it. Basically it was the same thing as Dr. Dyer said to do but I pretended I was on the subway.

Twinkie That is a great Idea I have been trying to quit for a while now but I can't do it and I've tried a lot of things. I like this suggestion of telling yourself you are not a smoker. The funny part is I have used this idea before. When I played football my coach would ALWAYS wear shorts and I asked him one day as I was freezing at practice aren't you cold? And he said no mind over matter just keep telling yourself you are not cold and you won't be. And it worked. I am going to give it a try.

I quit smoking in may of last year, woke up one day and decided to quit, I too smoked about a pack a day, I too had a nervous tick, and the shakes as well, the tick started coming on the second day, also it seemed at times that I couldn't hear, why I don't know, there are gums and patches to ease you off smoking but I felt with myself that I would just go back to it, the tick and shakes stopped after 4-5 days, and by day 14 I felt completely fine, no anger outburst, or short fuses,

Sadly I have not quit, I started back smoking. But I plan to use the whole tellingmyself I am not a smoker. That's something I have not tried. And it is nice to know that it could all be over in two weeks, the short fuses. Thanks for all the advice everyone! I'm going to try and quit, again!

I quit smoking and had alarming symptoms for the first three days... after that, gradual losing of the grip of nicotine.
Three days are the worst. After two weeks, the nicotine is out of your system. Then, it is a matter of changing your habits to avoid former smoking situations.
A glass of *ice* water is a good substitute in the interim. :) Short walks are helpful.
Think of this... John McCain spent *six years* in a pow camp, part of the time being tortured! Can't you spend three days then two weeks without smoking? After that the chemical is out of your system. A brand new like awaits you, a much better life.
Have a mantra, a better life, a better me... :)
Good Luck!
