Hello I've just recently been given a 10 week old boy kitten, when we first got him he used the litter box straight away but we bought some new kitty litter and its a lot diff from the one he first used and now he's peeing on the furniture and different places in the house such as paper, clothes, sheets but he still uses the kitty litter for his poos & wees!
I'm really confused in why he's doing this his litter tray is always almost clean!
Also he's scared and jumpy sometimes and when it comes to patting him all he wants to do is eat your arm and hand lol! I don't mind that too much but when he gets really hard and it really hurts I don't know what to do with him. My partners at the point where he wants to give it to the spca but I love this kitty.
Any help on this would be most appreciated :)

Hi there, it sounds like he is marking his territory and is probably also feeling a bit scared, are there any other animals in the house or have access to the house? He may be just trying to play with you, kittens sometimes rough house but usually have siblings or their mother to discipline them, have you tried going back to the old kitty litter and buying him some toys? I have found that ping pong balls and little mice and a piece of string tied to a chair or door handle are great.

He needs more handling too, try sitting on the floor with him, and just touch him gently, he needs to get used to you.

Hope this helps

thanks heaps!:)

Sounds like next doors cat is trying to establish his authority also, can he get into your house? If he can, block the cat flap for a while until your new boy is more comfortable and feels completely safe.

Glad to know I was of some help ;)

How big is your place? Kittens are much like babies... they'll be happily playing and suddenly realize that they need to go to the bathroom RIGHT NOW and if the litterbox is too far away, they go where they are. So it might help to have a second box if the house is big, or there is an upstairs/downstairs.

Next... kittens play rough! Doesn't mean that you have to put up with it. Right now is when you need to teach him that hands are not playthings. If he puts his claws or teeth on you, you need to either squeal or hiss (squealing is what kittens do, momma hisses if it gets too rough), put the kitten down and stop playing with him. At the same time, give him lots of play time with things on strings that he can pounce on and kick and bite. Basically, you want to teach him that toys are for playing, hands are for petting. And I would wait until he was pretty worn out from playing before trying to cuddle him. Otherwise he's just not going to be able to help himself and will probably play-attack your hand.

And, this will eventually calm down. Kittens just have a lot more energy than adult cats do.

Acid will neutralize the smell from his "accidents." Steam, lemon juice and vinegar all work. Get him fixed.

Awww Simone, it is a bit early for that yet :-) but I agree with the vinegar and also Bicarbonate of Soda sprinkled on his "accidents" will help neutralize, is non harming and REALLY works too :-)

You need to go back to the original litter.a cat will only use the type of litter it was trained with... I had the same problem when I broght home a new kitty... so I read up on it... try using a mitten toy from petsmart to keep him from hurting you .he definitely needs some kind of stimilation.a laser pointer works great... whatever you do... do not clean uo cat mess with amonia based products... the cat will mistake it for another cats scent and then they will try to mark over it to claim territory
