Can anyone identify this short story: it was in a sci fi collection of short stories. It was about 35-40 years ago I read it. It was two pages long.
In the future data storage becomes more dense. Soon all information is held on a hollowed out asteroid. No one actually knows anything; education is a matter of specialising in a retrieving the data you need from this asteroid. One day a fixer guy tries to refer to the databank to see how to make a simple household repair. The answer is erroneous and is a loop. The story ends with the clear implication that all is doomed as the knowledge needed to fix the system is locked up in the system itself.
Thanks
