If a bad tooth is left untouched by a dentist what could happen?

What problems can it cause?

I keep it clean and brush my teeth several times a day and use listeriene it doesn't really give me any trouble maybe 4 or 5 times I've not got abses or anything like that
I hate dentist and I know I'm not on my own but I mean I freak out start shaking and heart pounds in my chest till I feel sick. I've made an appointment to get referred to the hospital to get it taken out was just wondering if it could be making me ill I've had several serious chest infections and cold after cold after cold and other things. Could a bad tooth cause anything else?? Head aches migraines, neck ache

A bad tooth can cause every single health problem you cited above in your post and some more. I know when I have a tooth problem I can have shooting pain down the side of my neck into my shoulder and into my back as obviously the nerve has been touched somewhere. I've had headaches from hell due to a bad tooth. I've had my neck swell up, sinus problems galore, chest infections and numerous colds. Basically your mouth is the gateway for all kinds of nasty germs to get into your body. Please don't be so resistant to having it taken out or going to the dentist. Bad teeth can also cause infections to go into your brain (yeah, no kidding) and lodge into your heart (yeah, no kidding). Your whole body will be relieved of this unnecessary exposure to infection once the tooth is removed. Please have it removed and you'll feel a lot better, trust me, I know from experience once the offending tooth is out you will feel like a new person.

A bad teeth can cause problems because it can send bacteria through your body.
Even if your teeth are clean the rotting part of the tooth still can cause you problems.
They say it can cause heart problems and some fibromyalgia type symptoms
I know when I was younger my bad teeth made me feel really weak.
I never had shooting pains but it may be possible.

The above posts are absolutely accurate. You can run into more health issues than you'd ever think, even death if the tooth is allowed to get badly infected.

The longer you leave it untreated the more difficult your visit to the dentist will be. It's much easier to deal with things when you aren't in pain.

So me feeling like c**p for ages could be down to a bad tooth hope so because nothing has turned up in bloods or urine test or anything

And do you know what caused me to get a bad tooth?

Getting my tongue pieced I kept biting the ball while I was sleeping and I must have bitten to hard one night and the middle fell out eating a drum stick lolly, then to make things even better I went to the dentist straight away when it had fallen out and she wouldn't fill it for me then I got pregnant and couldn't get put to sleep to get it taken out and I had the worst morning sickness 24 hours a day any food, parfume smoke, car fumes set me off so that didn't help either
Thank you both I've got appointment on the 13th of may ages away then it'll be a few weeks after that before I get appointment to get it taken out at the hospital

Yes, if you have an infection in a tooth it will run through your whole body and can make you feel very run down. You may want them to give you a good cleaning while you are under the anasethetic to be sure there is no infection due to gum disease running through your body as well.

I have bad teeth too. Very bad. Like 95% of my teeth are either rotted or just plain messed up. I'm scared to go to the dentist because I know I will have to have surgery of some kind. And here lately it's gotten worse. My cheek near my bottom gumline has swollen in just one day and it's hard to breathe due to a chest cold out of nowhere. I keep putting it off and putting it off (have all my life) and I want to get something done but I don't know where to start :(

You really have to stop putting it off. If you have infection present it will run through your whole body causing you to feel unwell. This kind of infection has been linked to stroke, heart attack, respiratory problems and death. Call a dentist today and start making a plan for your teeth. I am sure the only thing they will do at the first appointment is take x-rays, do a complete exam, and give you prescription for antibiotics. I urge you to not put it off any longer! Please!

Yes this is true, I have a bad tooth for the past month and I have really been feeling sick. I started with a painful ear ache and the antibotics given to me for my ears did not work. I went to the dentist for the tooth and low and behold I had a infection in my mouth.

True a bad tooth can make you feel very bad. I have a bad tooth for the 6 weeks or so. I got a terrible ear infection. I was given a antibiotic ear drop. The medication did not work. I finally went to the dentist this week and found I have a infection in my mouth. I will be getting this touth extracted on Friday.

I too have very bad teeth, I don't have a single tooth left that is whole. Most of them are rotten and broken off. I live with pain every day. I have no energy to do anything any more. I have let my whole body, looks, everything go straight to hell. I did not do this on purpose, but about 16 years ago I got a infection and could not afford to go to the dentist, so I left it untreated. Now 16 years later that one infection has spread to my entire mouth and body. I cannot afford to go to the dentist and I live in a very small town in Oklahoma where there is no help for this. I wait tables for 2.50 an hour and make maybe 100.00 a week in tips (this would be a good week). I have a disabled husband and 3 children I am supporting so my health is always the last to get dealt with. Because of my teeth I cannot eat anything to hot or cold, nothing at all with sugar in it. Nothing to hard or soft, so I do not eat very much because they don't make food that I can eat that won't hurt my teeth. Anyway, if you have a toothache and can afford to go to the dentist you should go do not put it off because you don't like them, you do not want one small thing turning into 16 years of pain. Trust me it sucks!!

I had a major tooth infection going on under my front tooth crown for well over 2 years. I take meticulous care of my teeth and am diligent about keeping my 6 month check ups. I complained of an odor for well over 2 years and a bad taste in my mouth, but I was reassured everything looked great! Well, after my recent x-rays, it showed half of my tooth missing, severe gum and bone loss. Resulting in a front tooth extraction, bone and tissue graft and now I have to walk around with a partial denture until all heals for a more functioning tooth. Meanwhile, the costs are through the roof because of this dental office's negligence.I could have died if this majorly infected tooth got into my bloodstream! When in doubt always DEMAND further investigation about something that doesn't seem right!

Just had two cut out yesterday, longer you wait, worse you feel, more expensive it is to get them removed. Just cost $1000 to get two top back teeth cut out and it hurts. Only alternative to oral surgeon is a dental school(scary)dentist is cheaper waste no time!

I am having (3) lower teeth cut out on Monday, due to my own fear of going to a dentist. For the last year I have felt really rotten all over. My dentist had to prescribe an antibiotic for me to take for a week before having this procedure done. I just wanted you to know that bad teeth can really be very dangerous an abcess can go directly to your brain or your heart. I know that after Monday I will make dental hygiene one of my top priorities!

I have this toothache it comes and goes . Lastnight it started around one . I woke up and my whole body hurt it even hurt for my husband to put his arm around me . Back pain , neck pain pain up and down my arm . It was horrible . I took 4 different kinds of pain meds . Got to take more before I go to bed . Cause it always comes back full throttle the next day . I got my wizdom tooth pulled . I have 5 more teeth that need to be pulled also . When I was in school in 96 I got hit in the mouth with a softball . Never got it fixed . I was supposed to have a root canal and now those two teeth are decaying . It hurts so bad along with my wisdom tooth that is descending into my gum only a small portion is sticking out and that portion has a hole in it . In other words get them pulled as soon as possible . No matter how much you brush , flooss etc . It won't go away .

Brat,

Most general dentists will remove teeth if it appears that no complications will occur. If you have a regular dentist I would go see him/her.

It sounds as if your dentist did not serve you well. If what you are saying is that because of the dentist's negligence you have suffered needless bone loss and required grafting (a pretty expensive procedure!) then you should consult an attorney for a possible malpractice lawsuit.

I've had a temporary filling 4years ago. And I never went back to finish my dental care. Becose it would cost me 750$. So I kind of forgot about it .

Was fine but now 4 year later. I think I have rottens teeths, and I mean like 80% of them. Broken, chipped, some can't even be called teeths anymore cause they are kind of soft.

I've had panic attacks, chest pain, breething problem and other things.

I do want to see a dentist. But unfortunately just saying hello to one cost 100$ + test-cleaning 100-150$ and then repairing, or filling 355-700$ for 1 tooth.

Ill make this cheapest possible lets say 500$. For only 1 tooth.. I have over 80% of my teeths to do.

Only millionaires can afford dentist.. the rest of us can just go die.

I was a coward when it came to dentists... not anymore! It helps to do research [like sedation] and have a friend or family member with you. I took sedation and I was calmer than before, now I breathe better and my ear does't ring, anymore. It was a double extraction of wisdom teeth, now they're all out, and I really feel like a new person.

Dentists... is it pausable to stay away from dentists? Combination of drilling teeth while using an interrogation light a few inches away from your face. I'm not exactly excited about dentist appointments.

Im just a health science student, but to delay my dentist appointments- here are some possible suggestions:
Avoid bacterial infection in mouth - AVOID soft drinks/ confectionary
Make sure you have a well balanced nutrition (Eat plenty of veggies/fruit) (avoid takeaway)
Brush teeth regularly, floss.
Don't smoke

Vitamins: A, C
Mineral suppliments: Daily zinc supplements (so good! )
Others: Daily garlic tablet

If you notice any inflammation -
1) wash your mouth with sea salt mixed in with warm water regularly
2) Eat a crushed garlic (antibacterial)

I have had a sore throat for a month and went to the doctor and he said it must be viral. Then, I was at the dentist and he said I had a non-impacted wisdom tooth that was decayed and needs to be pulled. For a month I have been feeling like I have acid reflux and a sore throat. Will pulling the tooth relieve the symptoms or should I also go to ent to get my throat scoped.

Yogapple
Jul 8, 2012, 04:27 AM
Hi yuckywisdom,

The decaying tooth in your mouth allows for bacterial growth/activity, which in turn sets off the inflammatory response in your lymph nodes in both your mouth and throat (> resulting in sore throat symptoms). The bacteria residing in your decaying tooth is lowering your overall immune system, so by removing it quickly by your dentist, I think that you would feel A LOT better.
Also > sugars inhibit your immune cells from working properly, so if you want to get better quicker & stop bacterial growth, immediately stop eating sugar (esp soft drinks/processed takeaway food/confectionary).

Maybe give yourself an immune system a boost> vit C,A,D, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vit D & eat a wide variety of veggies/fruit, try a garlic tablet/day. Some foods/soft drinks/stress-related factors may induce gastroesohageal acid reflux. I tend to get acid reflux due to specific triggers (eg prolonged stress, overeating, drinking soft drinks/alcohol, eating too quickly or eating while stressed). If these symptoms persist without any known cause, I would suggest seeing your GP about it to discuss possible options & see if there's any underlying causes. While your experiencing gastroesohageal reflux, I would sleep with your head slightly elevated so that the acid reflux doesn't disturb your sleep patterns.
I hope things go well for you! : )

OMG I am in some REALLY bad pain and there is nothing that helps me, I am only 37 and had to have 12 of my teeth pulled out from.the time I was 20 till um I go back to the densit on the 9 the of August to have the one now pulled, I already have a flipper and now I got to have another tooth from the front added :'(.. But let me tell.you I did almost die from a infection that went into my brain from my tooth in 2002 and I was in the ER and they said I was fine but after sending me home with b/s meds it was about 3 hours later and a Sheriff was at my door to take me.back to the ER there was something OVER LOOKED in my labs he said and he was called to pick me up and bring me.back and when I got back to the ER. Wich the sheriff just followed us there and made sure I did check in,I was like why would you send the sheriff to get me I was about to run LOL... the Dr then told me I was going to die if I didn't get back in and admitted then so I guess if it's a life or death they can send a sheriff to pick you up LOL... but anyway I was very ill and didn't know I was that sick, I was in the hospital away from my kids for two weeks and on all kinds of meds it so was not worth keeping my two teeth!! I didn't get them pulled because it would look bad, well I finally did and yeah it didn't look good but I feelt better, but now going threw it again wish me luck!! I hope if you are reading this and have bad teeth please please get it taken care of ASAP its not worth what it, they can make you teeth if it's that big of a deal I did :+) I wish you all the best...

Please let me of a testimony to say I am 28 and haven't seen dentist in over 11 years, I got absess on BOTH sides but only pone side was really bad and swollen it looked nasty so I called Saturday emergency dentist (mind you at this time I was having NO pain just swelling) the dentist said emergency extraction and draining was needed, as he pulled a piece of my JAW came out with it because infection dissolved through the bone!! And now I am on antibiotics and going to get other side taken out next week. BUT I was always nauseated dizzy weak no energy always tired and felt sick all the time my heart would also pump really hard. I felt like I was 75 year old and IM ONLY 28!! So PLEASE people don't mess with your teeth, always get them checked and trust me extractions and the shots are not half as bad as losing your pretty jaw!!

just go and have an exam. Most dentist will work w/you on money. Get the bad ones pulled and the fillable ones filled, then work on bridges and implants. Quit soda, or rinse afterwards. Slow down on all sugar. You'll feel a lot better. A lot of the times, the dentist will prescribe antibiotics after an extracion. WHY?? Because they can't see all the infection until afterwards and x-rays don't show this up. I KNOW!

I have an intense fear of the dentist!
So when I broke my bottom back molar, I felt sick to the stomach.. cause I knew it would mean a trip to the dentist!
I booked myself in and got it removed today. It had to be surgically removed which took an hour. I am 23 years old and cried the whole time, shaked like crazy and squeezed the crap out of the assistants hand.
Now I'm at home and have taken some pain medication and had a little sleep I'm relieved that I've had it removed after reading this thread!
Looking back, the hardest part was getting the numbing needles!

It can cause death. I have lost two friends because they never saw a dentist and bad teeth. They brushed all the time and kept their teeth clean too. If you get an infection the bacteria spreads through your bloodstream. Both died instantly. Their hearts stopped but had multiple symptoms beforehand throughout their bodies. I go to a dentist every six months for cleaning and check up.

Yeah I know how it feels I feel really weird all the time like I can't eat and I get light headed and I get really cold out of no where I went to the dentist and they said that its just a filling that I have to get done but the top of it is infected and I wouldn't need a root canal I was happy about that but I'm so scared of the dentist when I was there I was shaking and I couldn't talk or breathe I was terrified I hate the dentist I cry when I'm there ! I'm getting it done may 3rd and I'm very very nervous when I have my mouth open for a few seconds I feel really sick and I feel like I'm going to threw up and I hate doing that I'm just hoping I don't feel like that when I'm there I just want to get this done so I feel better and I can go for walks and go to my boyfriends lacrosse games with out feeling sick

I agree wholeheartedly. I went to the dentist recently for the first time in 13 years! I was terrified of having a tooth pulled but ended up going for three in one sitting (two upper wisdom and a molar with a hole in it from the decay) as well as a deep gum cleaning. I wouldn't call getting teeth pulled "fun" by any means, but despite the pain I felt BETTER than I had in years. Jaw pain, neck pain, headaches, swollen glands, GONE. So worth it. I will never put off my dental care again!

In my community the health department had a dentist in on selected days each month and he performs procedures for $5 each if your income is low. There are also clinics that will charge you based on income. Hope this helps

I had a root canal on 2 teeth about 15 months ago. I went last month to a different dentist for cleaning and when he told me that the same 2 teeth were abcessed I almost did"nt believe him. He showed me on the x rays. I thought it was just sinus pain. He sent me to another endo doctor and he said that the teeth were not properly treated the first time and that he could treat them but it would cost 1,200.00 for each tooth.
I had one extracted yesterday and it took over an hour for him to get the tooth out. When he pulled the second piece of the tooth out it felt like someone had let air out of my sinus cavity.I have had sinus problems, congestion and the works for the past few years. I am wondering now if it all was coming from these teeth.
Thank God I finally found a dentist I can trust and shows me the X rays and explains each step of treatment to me. Feeling much better today. Even have more energy than I've had in a while. Will get the other tooth extracted next Thursday. Looking forward to it knowing that this will get rid of all the infection in my mouth.

I had a dentist molest me and my sister as a child. He drilled every tooth in our head, cost our parents lots of money. Now I will not go unless they can give the laughing gas. I have a tooth that needs to come out, causing all kinds of neck and arm pain. Then to top all of that off, I am diabetic on different kinds of medication. I have an upper plate and I know that I do not want to get a lower one, just wish it was not so darn expensive to go and get them cleaned.

Infected teeth and root canaled teeth can also be infected root canaled teeth usually are always infected . Do some research. First off, I'm going to yell this out "NEVER EVER EVER LET TEETH INFECTIONS ABSCESS TEETH FRACTURES JUST GO!" After reading the Root Canal cover up and seeing the 3000 case studies I'm sold that I would never get a root canal only an porcelain implant. The results can and may devastate your life beyond belief you can become disabled this is not a joke it is so serious and dangerous do your research and you will be stunned at the stories I've read and heard from people. It is unreal! My dentist told me that the medical community is now putting pressure on dental community because the MD are now seeing some of the devastating effects of dental work in the ER in their practices awareness is building.

The symptoms that infected teeth can cause: nausea, vomiting, stomach issues, chills, rash, fever , appedictis, wheezing, shortness of breath, sinus infections, neck pain, ear issues dizziness, sore throat, weakness, headaches, heart problems, lung issuess, coordination balance issues, co-infections, inflammation, eye issues like double vision , brain inflammation and yes it can caused death. I'm sure there a more symptoms If you have the wrong dentist your in for a fight! I found a biological holistic dentist and I wanted all five mercury crowns out and I wanted both root canaled teeth extracted and I had the clifford test to find out what was safe for me which was porcelain crowns

I hired am, investigative biochemist scientist to get to the bottom of my suffering 1 1/2 years of hell The conclusion was reached that I became ill when the dentist had worked on my wisdom tooth . Then that area was tested for an infection bingo tested positive for an injection,

The holistic dentist listen to the scientist and extracted my wisdon tooth and then ozone was injected into the area to kill all the bad stuff. My ND injected ozone into my sinuses , around my neck, my neck and glands were swollen big, and all the areas where I had root canaled teeth removed. Ozone may cause an instaneous recovery , or may need it for a few weeks not a big deal since it gives your life back.
